Why put text in an image

A short line of text in a picture stands out in a feed full of plain posts, and it travels well when people share or screenshot it. It works best for things that are meant to be read at a glance:

  • A quote or a strong statement you want people to remember.
  • A short list, like three rules or five tools.
  • One number with a caption, such as a result or a surprising fact.
  • A note, with a title and a few lines under it.

Keep the important words in the post text too. Search and screen readers read the text of your post, not the words inside an image.

How to use it

  1. Write your text. Each template reads it a little differently: in Headline, the first line is the headline; in List, each line is an item; in Big number, the first line is the number and the rest is the caption; in Highlight, put *asterisks* around the words to highlight.
  2. Pick a template, a size, a light or dark theme and, if you like, a soft colour.
  3. Choose Create image and download the PNG.

Add your username if you want it on the card; otherwise the templates that show one use @yourname.

Both fit Threads' image limits: JPEG or PNG, up to 8 MB, 320–1440 px wide (Threads API: Overview). See every limit in the Threads limits cheat sheet.

Make it readable

  • Short wins. If the text is too long for a template, it's shortened to fit, and you'll see a note. Cut words, or switch to a template with smaller type, like Minimal.
  • Contrast. The light and dark themes and the soft colours are all chosen to stay easy to read.
  • Alt text. When you post, add a description of the image in the Threads app (or in Govir's editor). It helps people who use screen readers.
  • Emoji. Most emoji are drawn; the rare ones that can't be are left out, and you'll be told.

What happens to your text

Your text is sent to Govir only to draw the image, which comes straight back to your browser. It isn't stored or logged. Each image carries a small govir.app signature. To keep the tool free for everyone, each address can create up to 20 images a day.

Questions

Can I remove the govir.app signature? Not in the free tool. In Govir, paid plans can create images without it, right inside a post.

Can I make a carousel? Not here. Govir's editor turns long text into a set of cards and adds them to a post as a carousel.
